Our Club
An introduction to Panmure.
Founded in 1845 by seventeen gentlemen. Twenty-first oldest golf club in the world. One of the twenty-four clubs that originally subscribed for the Amateur Championship trophy. Quietly proud of all of it.
Records exist of Sir Robert Maule playing golf on the Barry links as early as 1527. The club itself was formally founded in 1845 — and since then has welcomed Open champions, hosted national amateur finals, and quietly looked after the game on this small stretch of Angus coast.
Panmure is one of only twenty-four clubs that originally contributed funds toward the purchase of the Amateur Championship trophy, first contested in 1885. Its position in the early constitution of organised British golf is unusual for a club of its size and remoteness — and a fact that members will rarely volunteer unless asked directly.
The course has hosted regional qualifying for The Open Championship many times, including most recently in 2019, when it also hosted qualifying for the R&A Girls Amateur Championship. Past Open Champions who have competed seriously over the Panmure links include Harry Vardon, Ted Ray, James Braid, Tommy Armour, Henry Cotton, Roberto de Vicenzo, Sandy Lyle and Pádraig Harrington. Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Dustin Johnson have all visited for recreational play.
The course, in brief
A par seventy of 6,360 yards from the white tees, designed in its original form by Old Tom Morris and reshaped in 1922 by James Braid. The walk takes in pine forest, fairway hummocks, the Buddon Burn and — at the sixth — a single pot bunker that bears Ben Hogan's name.
The club, in character
Member-owned, capped at five hundred, and run as it has always been: with care, not fuss. The clubhouse is one of the finest old golf buildings in Scotland, modelled on the Royal Calcutta Golf Club after Dundee's nineteenth-century trading ties with India. A jacket and tie is still required for dinner in the Dalhousie Room.
Visitors are welcomed from April to October. Members come from across the United Kingdom and beyond. The waiting list is currently open across all categories.
